[41848] The identity of the father of Dora, Flora and Mary's youngest son, who died as a youth, is not known. If indeed the dates and identity of the man recorded as killed, Samuel S. Rutledge, in the battle of Richmond in the Civil War and births of these children are correct, their father could not have been Samuel. Thomas Jefferson, Mary's oldest, was born 3 months after the death of Samuel, not an uncommon occurrence during times of war. Some in the family who knew Mary acknowledge that her three younger children were not by Samuel but have not identified the father. Mary did not seem to have converted to the Morman Church so it is not likely that she was hiding a multiple marriage situation which was not legal in Colorado at the time.

When Mary Angeline was old, she lived with her daughter Flora in Durángo, Colorado. She kept chickens to sell eggs. She would keep the eggs under her bed for safe-keeping. Her grandchild made a game of sneaking into her bedroom to snitch eggs. When Mary caught them she would chase them and yell, "My God, there goes another egg!"

She came to Colorado with her father as a part of an LDS group under an agreement to live within a United Order. There is no account of Mary Angeline having been converted to the LDS religion. She appears to have lived with her father after the move to Colorado.
